Sanford Westbrook among Fifty-eight Minnesota hospitals earn patient-safety awards

Program recognizes superior efforts to prevent adverse health events

Sanford Westbrook Medical Center recently received notification of its place among the state’s honored health care facilities for excellence in two patient safety initiatives.
According to information released by the Minnesota Department of Health, Sanford Westbrook was among fifty-eight Minnesota hospitals this month receiving one or more awards recognizing superior efforts to prevent the most prevalent adverse health events. Westbrook was recognized in the areas of Safe Skin and Safe Site.

The Minnesota Hospital Association’s Patient Safety Excellence Awards honor hospitals participating in at least one of the association’s four safety campaigns to prevent: pressure ulcers, or bedsores (“SAFE SKIN”); patient falls (“SAFE from FALLS”); wrong-site invasive procedures (“SAFE SITE”) and retained foreign objects in labor and delivery (“SAFE COUNT”).

To qualify, hospitals must have implemented at least 90 percent of a campaign’s required safety measures, such as verifying that they are repositioning at-risk patients at least every two hours to prevent pressure ulcers.

“These awards set the bar very high,” said MHA Patient Safety Vice President Tania Daniels. “Winning hospitals have achieved measurable and meaningful progress toward implementing best practices to drive down adverse events.”

Each campaign’s improvement requirements are based on national and state best practices. They are also based on participating hospitals’ sharing of information about adverse health events that occurred at their facilities.

Rick Nordahl, Sanford Westbrook & Tracy CEO, holds high praise for the every day effort of all Sanford Westbrook team members. “The entire Sanford Westbrook staff is passionate about giving the highest level of care to our patients, and have been deserving of this accolade for some time.” “It is wonderful to see the smallest hospital in Minnesota recognized as being among the safest”
